Avon Meadows Community Wetlands
The Avon Meadows Community Wetlands cover 24 hectares of floodplain grassland and is located on the edge of the town. It has been designed in on-going consultation with the local community by staff from the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust and Wychavon District Council and is jointly owned by Wychavon and Pershore Town Council. In June 2009, as part of the wetland creation scheme, 50,000 reed seeds were planted in a week-long community reed planting event. The seeds for the reeds had been collected locally and grown by Pershore College staff and students. This newly created wetland has already increased biodiversity in the area. The hope is that it will also reduce Pershore’s contribution to flooding and improve water quality in the River Avon.
